Anatomy in Song

It's back, bitches!!!!! Grey's premiered Thursday night and marked it's 5th season with a 2-hour episode that I don't really think I caught completely and that really just didn't grab me like I expected or hoped it would. I wish I had the time to go through each group and give some information on them (especially Other Lives because they're a local group for me) but I have not one but two funerals to attend today and that to me is far more important. I did however want to get them up and posted though as I received more than a few emails over the weekend asking if I would continue to post the Grey's tunes here and so as is evidenced by this post, the answer is yes.

The premiere let me down but as always, it's more about the music for me and some super great tunes were played so I'll just get right to 'em...you won't find Taylor Swift's tune on here as it isn't out yet but if someone happens to have it or get it and would like to send a copy my way, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll post it when it becomes available.

"You're scared, scared, scared 'cause I feel like home."

Surely by now, if you've been reading here at all you know how much I adore Rachael Yamagata. I've mentioned her a few times and been slightly more than glowing in my praise of her talent. I tend to exaggerate...I'm a big personality so it comes with the territory but nothing I've EVER said about Miss Y has been embellished even a tiny bit. She's phenomenal, extraordinary, sensational, tremendous, remarkable and every other $2 word I can possibly think of...yeah, she's pretty much the bee's knees.

It's been too long since she's put an album out but the wait is almost over and I'm so excited for it I can barely stand it! Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart, a double disc effort from Warner Brothers will drop on October 7th and I can already tell you now that if it doesn't make my number one, it's probably only because Ray LaMontagne beat her to it. It isn't a full two discs really but it's more than enough to get both the gentle, vulnerable side of her as well as the edge that lies just beneath the exterior.

Be on the listen for some of my other favorite artists on the album as well...Mr. LaMontagne makes an appearance as does Maria Taylor. Here are some tracks to get you in the mood to pre-order your copy NOW!

Rachael Yamagata – “Elephants” (Album Version)

Rachael Yamagata – “Elephants” (My FAVORITE Version)

Rachael Yamagata – “Accident”

Rachael Yamagata – “Sidedish Friend”

Rachael Yamagata – “Sunday Afternoon”

"The bigger the figure the better I like her, the better I like her the better I feed her..."

I mentioned in my Susie Suh post that I have a ridiculously huge crush on John Cusack and have had for going on 20 years...it's in my DNA I think and it will never, ever change. And not because he's adorable and endearing in the best ways possible either...he and I seem to share a multitude of opinions and musical tastes and a large part of me is convinced that he surely must be my soul mate. But I digress a bit. Suffice it to say that if John's in a film, I'm going to see it. I'm going TO the theater to plunk down my $40 for tickets, pop corn, candy and soda and I will prop my feet up on the seat in front of me when possible. This is the only way for me to enjoy a Cusack flick and Friday was no exception as John's animated film Igor hit theaters. I took Em and a family friend and we thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I've read lots of mixed reviews and while I wasn't completely blown away by it on the whole, there was an incredible piece of saving grace even for those who found it to be something they'd rather leave for the DVD watch list...

THE MUSIC!

I defy ANYONE with a beating heart and full capacity of their limbs NOT to love Louis Prima. My Grandpa got me hooked on Louis Prima many, many moons ago and so to hear his music featured throughout this film made me happy and nostalgic. My ALL TIME favorite Prima tune was used and for that, I insist upon giving Igor both of my thumbs up because it just doesn't get any better than that for me.

For those of you reading this asking yourself who the hell Louis Prima is, I pity you. Sincerely. Maybe it's the fact that I've got ties to that classic New Orleans sound. Maybe it's that I so desperately adore swing/big band music that I've been told I must have lived then, died and come back in the 70's. Maybe it's that just like all great artists, their art is timeless. The chances are pretty good that you've enjoyed many of his songs by way of soundtrack appearances and just didn't know it or that as a child you loved his appearance in The Jungle Book as the voice of King Louie. Regardless of the reasons why Louis Prima might never have made it onto your radar, I STRONGLY urge you to do yourself a favor, look into his discography and get swingin'!!

Steve Hurley outlines Prima's life and music far better than I could ever hope to do here so I'll direct you to his article for All Music. For my contribution, some tunes to get you started on the right track...ENJOY!!

Louis Prima - "(Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby"

Louis Prima - "When The Saints Go Marching In"

Louis Prima - "Pennies From Heaven"

Louis Prima - "Jump, Jive, An' Wail"

Louis Prima - "Baby Won't You Please Come Home"

And my VERY, VERY, VERY favorite Prima song...

Louis Prima - "The Bigger The Figure"

"Just A Gigolo"

"Saying I love you doesn't mean that we're in love..."

Y'all know I love me some Marc Broussard and so since I don't have an enormous amount of time today, I thought I'd throw some tracks from his new album, Keep Coming Back, up here and let everyone have a listen. This is his Atlantic debut and comes on the heels of his FANTASTIC cover album S.O.S.: Save Our Soul and definitely still clings to that throwback sound that he's seemed to perfected.

He gets a little help from lovely ladies LeAnn Rimes and Sara Bareilles on two tracks that I'm diggin' today as well so fans of those songbirds might want to check those tracks out as well. It's a solid album, Marc delivers, per usual and I've been enjoying it for a few days so I suggest you take a listen and pick yourself up a copy soon.

"And I miss you more than I should; than I thought I could..."

Wow it's been awhile since I've posted! My apologies...life has a way of making us do what we have to do that keeps us from doing what we want to do sometimes. But...that's neither here nor there because today I'm back and I've been listening to TONS of great music since I've been gone and I'll be trying to share it all as quickly as I possibly can. I'll start with my boy Joshua Radin since his latest album, Simple Times, seems to be my soundtrack in the car these days. There's something so simplistic and beautiful about his music...it just gets me every single time. And he's joined by some amazing ladies on the album that make the music all the better...Patty Griffin and Meiko share their vocals on a few tracks and I can swear that I hear the one and only Schuyler Fisk harmonizing as well in spots.

It's not a secret that I'm a Radin fan...he's
been mentioned here many, many times before. And for fans, this is more of the same thing you already love. Mr. Whisper himself describes the new record in this way:

"This record represents the last two years of my life. It's about falling in and out of love, the world in which I live, my friends, my family, but most of all, it's a loss of innocence record; in writing these songs, I am trying to get back to where I started while also growing as an artist simultaneously - not a very easy task, but one that I will continue to struggle with for the rest of my creative life."

Enjoy these new tracks from Simple Times which drops into a record store near you September 30th...

And for Miss Erin who is so terrific...a new link to this song:

Joshua Radin feat. Patty Griffin - "You Got Growin' Up To Do"

I've been down this road before
I walk out the door
leave you on the floor
sometimes you run and hide
your foolish pride's
what keeps me from giving you more

So the best thing
I can give to you
is for me to go
leave you alone
'cause you got growin' up to do

Joshua Radin feat. Meiko - "Sky"

*And before you comment and email me that it's Ingrid Michaelson on this track, listen closely because it is in fact Meiko. Ingrid does not accompany him on the album version.

Sometimes I forget to love you like I should
But I'd never leave you - no, I never would
I never would

Oh, oh, oh, oh, you know the way to keep me on my toes
I, I, I will be fine - just say you'll stay forever mine
Oh, oh, oh, oh, you know the way to keep me on my toes
I, I, I will be fine - just say you'll stay forever mine
'Til we fall asleep tonight
'Til we fall asleep tonight

Joshua Radin - "Friend Like You"

I like the way you’re not afraid
You’ve got the world planned in your mind
People say you cannot do it
But they don’t know a friend like you

The girl you love has gone away
Still too young to know her heart
She’ll return her love renewed
'Cause she’ll never find a friend like you

When I had no one to call
All the world had shut me down
I showed up at your door so blue
Thank God I had a friend like you

Any time I’ve gone without
A home, a meal, a pair of shoes
If you had three you’d give me two
There ain't no other friend like you

Joshua Radin - "Free of Me"

And since Ellen & Portia stole one of my songs for their own wedding, here it is along with a few other oldies but goodies I have on hand...

Joshua Radin - "Today"

Joshua Radin - "The Fear You Won't Fall"

Joshua Radin - "Sundrenched World"

Joshua Radin - "Closer"

Radin will be hitting the road with Missy Higgins in October & November...for more information on those dates and times, check out the show listing on his site or Myspace.
